Rules

Here are the details of the upcoming SanMa Badminton Tournament 2022 to be held on March 5 at EVCC (East Valley Community Center) located at 2245 E Valley Pkwy, Escondido, CA 92027 from 9 AM to 4.30 PM. 

 Tournament Organization

  1. The tournament directors are Nishant Hariharan, Ajit Pillai and Mini Pillai
  2. The team captains are
    1. Team 1: Rajesh George
    2. Team 2: Mini Pillai
    3. Team 3: Hari Nair
    4. Team 4: Anoop Thomas
    5. Team 5: Ashish Aniyan
  3. Team captains are responsible for handling tournament related matters in coordination with the tournament directors 
  4. All team members must be members of San Diego Malayalees
  5. All teams must consist entirely of players from Chattambees or from Yodhas
  6. Prior to the tournament, the captains must submit player rankings to the tournament directors
    1. Captains must determine two A ranked players and two B ranked players to play in the men's category
    2. Captains must determine one A ranked player and one B ranked player to play in the women’s category
    3. U17 players will not be ranked
  7. Singles (Men’s & Women’s) matches must be played between two A ranked players
  8. Men’s Doubles (MD) teams must be made up of one A ranked player and one B ranked player
  9. Mixed Doubles (XD) teams must be made up of two B ranked players
  10. The matches will be run by team representatives according to a predefined match schedule. Please consult your team captain for details
  11. One referee from a non-playing team and 2 lines-persons from any team must be assigned to each match by the team captains
  12. Team captains and team members must check in with the tournament directors at 8:30 AM sharp on the day of the tournament at the venue
  13. Team captains will be responsible to find a replacement player in case anyone from their team backs out after the team is announced
  14. Only water is allowed inside the gymnasium at all times. Food is not permitted inside the gymnasium. Food may be consumed in the lobby, outside the gymnasium
  15. Tournament schedule (for planning purposes and subject to minor changes)
    1. 8:30 AM to 9 AM: Check-in for all players (Adults and U17 category) and open practice
    2. 9 AM to 4 PM: Round robin ties (matches)
    3. 4 PM to 4:30 PM: Prize distribution
    4. There will be no specific lunch time. Lunch will be available for pick up from 11 AM to 1 PM (approximate timing)
  1. Starting around 9:30 AM, the kids’ play/competitions will be organized throughout the day during the breaks between ties
  1. Please bring cash to cover expenses for venue, shuttlecocks, food, and refreshments
    1. Adult players: $20
    2. Minor players (under 18 years): $5
    3. Non-playing spectators (all age groups): $5

Tournament Rules

  1. Teams will play all other teams once in a round-robin format
  2. A tie between two teams consists of 5 Matches - Men's Singles (MS), Men's Doubles (MD), Mixed Doubles (XD), Women's Singles (WS) and Under-17 Singles (U17)
  3. Before each tie, the captain must submit their team’s list of players and their assigned match (i.e. WS, MS, MD, XD, U17) to the opposing captain and the tournament directors. Only players in the submitted team list will be allowed to play
  4. Team list / player lineups are not changeable once the tie starts. Any change to the team lineup after the tie starts will result in forfeiture of the tie 
  5. A strict 5 minutes warm up will be allowed before each tie
  6. During play each player/team can have upto two 1-minute breaks, if requested
  7. Matches in a tie must be played in this sequence: U17, WS, MS, MD, XD
  8. All five matches (U17, WS, MS, MD, XD) in a tie must be played
  9. Matches will be played according to the Badminton World Federation rules. Best out of 3 games to 21 points, rally scoring. Tie Break at 20-20, and win by 2 points, up to the cutoff of 29 points
  10. Winner of a singles match contributes 2 points to the SanMa team (Chattambees or Yodhas) tally. Winner of a doubles match contributes 1 point each to the SanMa team tally
  11. The overall winning team after playing the round-robin ties will be the team that wins the most number of ties
  12. Teams may end up with the same number of ties won/points (i.e. in a draw) after the round-robin. This situation will be resolved by
    1. first, looking at the difference between the number of matches won and matches lost and
    2. second, the difference between games won and games lost games (21 points)
  13. If a team or team member does not show up within 10 minutes of their tie/match being called, the team or team member will have to forfeit their match
  14. Player substitutions during the tournament must be discussed between tournament directors and captains
  15. Tournament directors’ decisions will be final at all times
